ELBERTA Pastor John Adolph Thies, age 90, a native of Poplar Bluff, MO, and a resident of Elberta, AL, passed away Sunday, February 14, 2010. He was a WWII veteran, having served in the U. S. Army from 1940-1941, and the Navy from 1941-1945. He was a radio engineer and announcer in Poplar Bluff, MO, from 1946-1953. He was a 1960 graduate of Concordia Theological Seminary in Springfield, IL. He served congregations in Woodland, IN, from 1960-1965; Newton, NC, from 1965-1969; Mobile, AL, from 1969-1977; St. Mark's, Elberta, AL, from 1977-1985; filled vacancies in Elberta from 1985-1986; Milton, FL, from 1987-1988; and Spanish Fort, AL, from 1990-1991. Pastor Thies is survived by his wife, Ruth Baumann Thies of Elberta, AL; three sons, David (Charae) Thies of Rockford, IL, Daniel (Evangeline) Thies of Milton, FL, and Andrew (Sandra) Thies of Huntsville, AL; one brother, Walter Thies of Poplar Bluff, MO; ten grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Services will be held Thursday, February 18, 2010, at 3:00 p.m., at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Elberta, AL, with Pastor Keith Ringers officiating.
