Eleanor P. Harpe, age 96, a resident of Fairhope, AL, passed away on Saturday, March 4, 2017. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene M. Harpe. Mrs. Harpe is survived by her nephew, George Powers of Fairhope; niece, Eleanor Powers of Indianapolis, IN; and a host of other loving relatives and friends. Mrs. Harpe furthered her education by attending Alabama State University where she received her Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree from Tuskegee University. After completing college she met her late husband Eugene Harpe in Fairhope; where he had moved to take care of his elderly mother.  They united in holy matrimony and built a home on the Denton Tract of land in front of her parents’ home facing South Mobile Street. Mrs. Harpe’s steps had been ordered to one of the highest calls, one can have in a lifetime; she made a commitment to serve the children by entering into a career in education.  She secured a position with the Baldwin County Board of Education where she taught for a number of years at Baldwin County Training School in Daphne, Alabama.  She taught the first, third, fourth and fifth grades, as well as junior high school Mathematics and English. She also held the position of Guidance Counselor.  She later transferred to Fairhope High School where she held the position of Guidance Counselor until her retirement in 1977.  Also in 1977 her dear mother Mrs. Olivette Powers transitioned into her eternal life. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Twin Beech AME Zion Church. She will lie-in-state at the Church from 10:00 AM until time of service.
