FAIRHOPE, AL Commander Gary F. Hammergren, USN retired went to be with the Lord on December 27. His faith and indomitable spirit touched everyone he knew and his unerring sense of honor and duty guided his actions throughout his life. Born in Saint Paul Minnesota, Gary went to Southwest Minnesota State College and upon graduation went to Aviation School at NAS Pensacola where he received his wings. Gary saw the world as a Navy helicopter pilot and those experiences were part of what defined his character. He was an engineer for 33 years at Ingalls Shipbuilding and touched many lives there with his compassionate leadership. Gary lived to help others and no task was too much of a burden for him. His unconditional love for his family is a lesson for us all. He is survived by two sisters Sharon and Gail, mother-in-law Joan and wife Helen who loved him beyond description. Visitation will be held Thursday, December 29, 2016 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home, Fairhope. Funeral services will be held Friday, December 30, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. at St. James Episcopal Church. Graveside services and interment will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Barrancas National Cemetery.
