Romaine Scott, III

d. September 19, 2016

FAIRHOPE, ALMr. Romaine S. Scott, III passed away on September 19, 2016. He was born and previously lived in Birmingham, AL before calling Fairhope home for the past 12 years. He served on the Board of Directors of the Point Clear Rotary Club and is a Paul Harris Fellow. He practiced law in Birmingham, Mobile and Fairhope for more than 35 years and served the Alabama State Bar on its Board of Bar Examiners. He also served as an editor on the American Bankruptcy Institute Journal and on the Alabama Lawyer. He is a graduate of Indian Springs School in Shelby County, Alabama, Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, and Cumberland School of Law of Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, where he graduated with honors. Romaine had a passion for music and developed an expert ability to play acoustic, bass, and rock guitar along with keys and piano. In his youth he formed a five piece band with his brother Clark and played for local friends and gatherings. Throughout his life he continued to play in neighborhood and church bands, always an instrument in hand, rhythmically tapping his foot to the music.  He authored, coauthored, and recorded several “originals” alongside his dear friend Ian Murray who hails from Dundee, Scotland.  Additionally, Romaine was an active member of the Nashville Songwriters Association International for many years.  Romaine was very proud of his work with the Free Church Youth Camps in Scotland, where he served as a mentor, teacher, music leader and charitable fund raiser. His influence, teachings and work guided a multitude of Scottish youth to Christ.  Never one for fanfare, he quietly donated all of the bibles for the children who attended the seasonal youth camps for many years. Prior to becoming an attorney, Romaine was a newspaper journalist at the Birmingham News, the Birmingham Post Herald, Augusta (Georgia) Chronicle, Norfolk Ledger - Star/Virginia Pilot and the Roanoke (Virginia) Times at each of which he was a music and book review critic. He honed his journalist writing craft in the 1970s rock-n-roll heyday while attending over 500 concerts interviewing band greats such as Fleetwood Mac, Bee Gees, the Allman Brothers, the Clash, the Doobie Brothers, et al. He is preceded in death by his mother Carol Lindsay Scott and his father Rev. Romaine S. Scott, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Rita Heidorn Scott, children Romaine S. Scott, IV (Crystal), Lindsay Coker, Maxwell Panter, and William Panter, grandchildren Kingston and Holland Scott, and MacKenzey and Savannah Coker, Mrs. Romaine S.
