Fairhope, AL Richard Warren Casey of Point Clear, Alabama died on Sunday, July 3, 2016, surrounded by his family. A Celebration of his Life will be held on Friday, July 8th at 4:30 p.m. in the Sky Lounge at Grand Hotel Marriott in Point Clear. He was born on July 10, 1941 in Washington, D.C. to Virginia (Weddleton) and Ralph Edward Casey. He grew up in Annapolis, Maryland and Summit, New Jersey, where he attended Bayley-Ellard High School and Morristown Prep. He graduated from SUNY Maritime College in Bronx, N.Y, where he was on the rowing team that won the Gold Medal in the International Lifeboat Rowing Race. He was a 2nd Mate in the Merchant Marine, and for many years, he was a Reserve Officer in the U.S. Navy. He earned his MBA at the Wharton School. As a consultant with Arthur D. Little in Cambridge, Massachusetts, he worked with companies and governments in many parts of the world. It was at ADL that he met and married Barbara (Jacobson) Casey in 1969. They moved to Washington, D.C., where he was Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Maritime Affairs. In 1971, he Joined Lykes Steamship Company in New Orleans and became Director of Engineering for its subsidiary Youngstown Sheet & Tube in Youngtown, Ohio. He later became Chairman of the Board of the Chicago Short Line Railroad and President of TransOceanic Terminal and Lykes Leasing Company in Chicago, Illinois. In 1979, Richard and his family moved to Mobile, Alabama, to be near his parents. He bought AIM of Alabama and later Construction Affiliates. He and Barbara have lived in Point Clear since 1993. He had his first heart attacks and bypass surgery in 1983. For 33 years and through a number of surgeries and procedures, he fought to live an active life and succeeded. Richard was a quiet man, but he had a wonderful sense of humor. He loved sailing, boating and fishing, working on his wooden boat, “Sugar,“ and spoiling his grandchildren. Richard is survived by his wife, Barbara; his son Sean (Emily) Casey of Brooklyn, New York; his daughter Erin (Jonathan) Bailey of Atlanta, Georgia; two grandchildren, Jackson and Elizabeth Bailey of Atlanta; his sisters, Elizabeth Herold of Stuart, Florida and Barbara (Russell) Ruffino of Rockville, Maryland, his sister-in-law Nancy (Robert) Peavy of Chevy Chase, Maryland; his brother-in-law John (Trudy) Jacobson of Leawood, Kansas; his father-in-law John Jacobson of Point Clear; and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the American Heart Association, the Eastern Shore Art Association, or a charity of your choice.
