Virginia Marie Callaway Piggott, 86, passed away in Starkville Mississippi on January 29, 2016 at the Bee Hive Homes of Starkville. Born January 11, 1930 in Hueytown, Alabama to Blanche Adelaide and Joshua Cecil Callaway, Virginia attended Hueytown High School. Prior to her 1948 graduation, she was active many clubs and activities including the Library and Latin Club and annual staff, as well as being elected to Girls State. She attended Charity Hospital School of Nursing in New Orleans, LA being pinned as a registered nurse in 1951. After graduation, she joined the United States Air Force as a lieutenant serving 3 years as a registered nurse practitioner. In 1953, while on active duty in Salinas, Kansas, she met and married Air Force navigator Joe Kenneth Piggott. After being honorably discharged in 1953, she continued to serve the country as a military spouse while raising 3 children. In 1967 upon retirement to Gulf Shores, Alabama she worked in Foley Hospital as a supervisory nurse until 1983. Continuing to use her skills and experience in the medical field, she actively volunteered with the Red Cross at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida until moving the Starkville, Mississippi in 2006. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Gulf Shores, Alabama and Calvary Baptist Church in Foley, Alabama. After moving to Starkville, Mississippi, she joined Faith Baptist Church. Virginia was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Joe Kenneth Piggott; parents, Blanche Adelaide and Joshua Cecil Callaway; sister, Adelaide Callaway Smith, and son, Jed Vincent Piggott. She is survived by her daughters, Melissa and her husband Barry Mixon of Starkville, Mississippi and Wendy and her husband Dan Smythe, of Huntsville Alabama, four grandchildren, Jessica and Zach Mixon of Starkville, Jonah and Sam Smythe of Huntsville, Alabama, and sister Jeanette Hayden of Tupelo, Mississippi. Graveside services were held on Saturday, February March 13, 2016 at Jubilee Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Daphne, AL at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested a donations in her name to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the church or charity of your choice.
