James William “Bill” Goodloe , Jr. a prominent Mobile attorney and public servant, died Monday at his home in Point Clear. He was seventy-two. He was born in Mobile of James William Goodloe and Marie Marechal Murphy Goodloe and attended Old Shell Road School before graduating from Murphy High School (named for his grandfather) in1960. He was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity at the University of Alabama, where he graduated in the class of 1964 with an officer’s commission in ROTC in the U.S. Army. In 1966 he married Carolyn Lee Carver Goodloe, of Tuscaloosa, his wife of 49 years. The following year he received his doctor of jurisprudence degree from the University of Alabama School of Law and entered the army as a captain with the 9th Infantry Division in Vietnam, where he served until 1969. After serving briefly as an assistant city attorney in Mobile, he joined the law firm of Vickers, Riis, Murray &Curran, where for the next 45 years he specialized in maritime and commercial litigation. He was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Mobile where he served as a deacon for 29 years, and was chairman of the deacons as well as chairman of the board of trustees. He served as president of the Rotary Club of Mobile, president and director of the Mobile Association of the Blind, director of the Alabama Easter Seal Society, board of trustees for the Rotary’s Children’s Foundation, and board member of the Fairhope Vietnam Memorial Foundation. He was a member of several Mobile mystic societies. He leaves his daughter Marie Goodloe (Plumer Burgett) Tonsmeire, and sons James William (Staci Lee) Goodloe III, and Lee Carver (Katie Shackleford) Goodloe, and grandchildren, Lee Tonsmeire, Sarah Tonsmeire, Will Goodloe, Sam Goodloe, Marianne Goodloe, Katharine Goodloe, and Lee Goodloe. Visitation will begin at 9:30 Thursday at the First Baptist Church of Mobile with Services 11a.m. and burial to follow at Pinecrest Cemetery. The family would especially like to thank Cory and Nicole Sledge and the Springhill Hospice team of nurses for their dedicated care.
