Edmund Augustine Dowling M.D., age 87, a resident of Fairhope, AL, passed away Monday, February 9, 2015. Edmund was born in Waterford, Ireland on July 26, 1927. He completed his studies in medicine at University College Cork in 1949. After an internship in Nottingham, England, he immigrated to the United States in 1952. Joan O'Connor soon followed him and they married in 1952. At the invitation of his cousin, Dr. Albert Casey, Edmund began a residency in pathology at Baptist Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. He later became Director of Surgical Pathology and Professor of Pathology at the University of Alabama Birmingham. In 1965 he became a member of the Birmingham Sailing Club and raced his Windmill in many local and national events. He also served a term as Commodore of the Birmingham Sailing Club. In 1974, the University of South Alabama and warm gulf waters beckoned, and Edmund moved his family to Daphne, Alabama. He served as Director of Surgical Pathology and Professor of Pathology until his retirement as Professor Emeritus in 1993. In retirement Edmund continued to enjoy cruising and racing in his Cape Dory sailboat, the Manannaun. He valued the companionship of his friends at the Fairhope Yacht Club and was an active member of the '4 o'clock club.' He was an avid fan of the Crimson Tide for over 50 years. He loved photography and captured many a Mobile Bay sunset. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Joan O'Connor Dowling and parents, Thomas Dowling and Rose Colgan Dowling. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Dowling of Fairhope; sons, Kyran Dowling (April Preston) of Spartanburg, SC and Conor Dowling of Tucker, GA; daughters, Finola Kavanaugh (Kevin) of Leesburg, VA and Deirdre Dowling of Daphne, AL; grandchildren, Daniel Kavanaugh, Kara, Shannon, and Alyssa Dowling; brother, Thomas Dowling (Ursula) of Waterford, Ireland. The family invites friends and colleagues to join in a Celebration of Life on May 2, 2015 from 2:00 to 5:00pm at the Fairhope Yacht Club.
