Charles Arthur Spaulding, Jr, passed away Thursday, November 27, Thanksgiving Day, in Fairhope, AL. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Chuck will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Chuck was born in Kansas City, MO on August 18, 1917 to Charles Arthur Spaulding and Helen M. Clark Spaulding. He grew up on the East Coast. He attended high school at Principia Upper School in St. Louis, Mo and Principia College at Elsa, IL. He played football, basketball, golf and tennis throughout his college days. During that time he married, for over 50 years, to the late Margaret Ann Ostenberg. He was an avid golfer and entrepreneur. Chuck patented the first water softener and was responsible for popularizing racquetball in the Midwest and also developed a side saddle golf putter. He was admired in the business community for his amazing enthusiasm, work ethic and ability to get things done, as he was President and CEO of numerous companies. Most importantly, he was a man loved and appreciated by all, especially his family! In 1998 Chuck met and married Margie Wikle who became his devoted wife and companion. They loved to travel, play cards with friends and visit family. They shared many happy years together. Chuck is survived by his loving wife Margie, and sons Steven O. Spaulding (Carolyn), Charles A. (Tuck) Spaulding III (Susan), J. Clark Spaulding (Sue), and David W. Spaulding (Cheryl). He also leaves eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Fairhope United Methodist Church, c/o of Shepherds Place, 155 South Section Street, Fairhope, and the First Church of Christ Scientist, 301 Fels Avenue, Fairhope. The family wants to express special appreciation to Chuck’s loving caregivers, Paula, Hope, Tanisha.
