MOBILE Horace Leslie Luckey (“Pop”), 91, of Mobile, Alabama, passed away peacefully in his sleep from complications with pneumonia on April 6, 2014, while surrounded by family. Mr. Luckey is predeceased by his first wife, Margaret Jeanne Luckey (Jeep); a granddaughter, Kelly Luckey; and a brother, Harold Luckey. Mr. Luckey was born on October 23, 1922, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Horace and Lydia Luckey. After residing in Missouri and Pennsylvania, Mr. Luckey relocated to Mobile, Alabama, in 1996, with his wife, Janet. Mr. Luckey was a devout Catholic, a dedicated father, a loving husband, an accomplished businessman and entrepreneur, and former Naval Officer. Mr. Luckey enjoyed sharing war stories from his time serving in World War II, and, in particular, his time serving on LST 779 in the South Pacific. As the last surviving Naval Officer assigned to LST 779, Mr. Luckey often shared his personal account of the famous flags raised at Iwo Jima and was honored to have been assigned to the ship that earned a spot in American history. Mr. Luckey left the military service in 1946 as a Lieutenant, Junior Grade, and worked in pharmaceutical sales and business. Mr. Luckey is survived by his wife of 40 years, Janet Luckey; sons, Horace Leslie Luckey, III of Seattle, Washington, Daniel Luckey of Reading, Pennsylvania, Thomas Luckey of St. Louis, Missouri, John Luckey of Austell, Georgia, Michael Luckey of Stafford, Virginia, and Paul Luckey of Houston, Texas; daughters Mary Jeanne Luckey of North Conway, New Hampshire, Patricia Anne Luckey of Haddonfield, New Jersey, and Genevieve Luckey of Mohnton, Pennsylvania; grandsons Kenneth B. Luckey, Dane L. Luckey, Paul J. Luckey, Jr., Schuyler Luckey, Joshua Bednar, Shane J. Pisko, Joseph N.T. Luckey, Jake Bednar, Peter Flavin, and Seth Bednar, Robert Kelly and PJ Johnson; granddaughters Chrishtan Glenn (Luckey), Shauna Luckey, Amanda Luckey, Kimberly M. Daugherty (Luckey), Sarah Flavin, Alexandra Luckey, Genevieve Luckey, and Meaghan Flavin, Kelly Goodwin, Casie Hornbeck, Christina Elson, Angel Houchin and Kara Johnson; a sister Anne Brennan (Luckey); and a great-granddaughter Annabelle Grace Glenn. A viewing will be held at Ambruster Funeral Home, 6633 Clayton Road, St. Louis, MO, on Thursday, April 10, 2014, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at St. Roch Catholic Church, 6052 Waterman Boulevard, St. Louis, MO, on Friday, April 11, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. with procession following to Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, 2900 Sheridan Road, St. Louis, MO.
