Doris Scott Heatherly Thomas July 28, 1924 –January 14, 2014 Doris Scott Heatherly Thomas , age 89 completed her final journey home on Tuesday , January 14, 2014. She was born on July 28, 1924 in Coggon, Iowa to Earl Win Scott and Clara Barbara Ehlers Scott. When she graduated high school the war broke out and at the age of 18 she took a train to Washington DC. There she worked for the War Department in clerical jobs during the war effort. She loved to roller skate and one night after work at a Roller Skating rink she met a young Marine, CPL James C. Heatherly from Tennessee. After that first date, he called his Mom back in Tennessee and told her, “I met the girl I’m going to marry”. Three months later young James proposed and she accepted and joined him in Chula Vista, California where on September 16, 1944 she married her young Marine. James shipped out to Okinawa, Japan to fight in the Pacific Theater in WWII, until the war ended, Doris worked as one of the original American women icons “Rosie the Riveter” in an Aircraft plant in California, welding and soldering parts for the aircraft needed in the World’s war effort. They moved across the country several times after they were married, as James found work in Automobile plants. They settled in Elyria, Ohio, and would remain there until the addition of two daughters, Alaine and Marla . Shortly thereafter, they made their way back to his home in LaFollette, Tennessee where in 1949 they had a son James. Her husband passed away in 1978, at the young age of 56. Doris would eventually meet and marry a second love of her life Dayle DeVere Thomas they married in 1981. They enjoyed twenty years together and she found happiness in dancing, traveling, and exploring the world and reconnecting with family and friends. Dayle passed away in 2001 and Doris remained the Matriarch of her family for the next 13 years. Doris loved her family deeply and they loved her! She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Clara Scott, her Sister, Joyce Clark, Her two wonderful husbands, James C, Heatherly and Dayle D. Thomas. She leaves a large family, daughters Alaine Linebarger ( Doug ), Gulf Shores, Al., Marla Lumpkin, ( Dan) Fairhope, Al. and son James Heatherly ( Ann ), Powell , Tn. , She was the Grandmother of 9: Kurt Linebarger, Gainsville, Fla, Kori L Powell, Columbia, S.C., Kevin Linebarger, Leadville ,Co. Scott Lumpkin, Summerdale, Al, Heather L. Ryals, Magnolia Springs, Al, Matt Lumpkin, Gulf Shores, Al, Chris Lumpkin, Marietta, Ga, Jessica Zody, Powell , Tn, Jamie Blevins, Powell ,Tn. She was the Great Grandmother of 23 who will cherish their memories of her and celebrate her life. On this day she has joined her Lord and Savior in Heaven and a multitude of family and friends as they celebrate this joyous reunion.
