FAIRHOPE, AL Mildred Howell Beck, age 97, passed away Sunday, January 5th, 2014. Mildred was born and grew up in Reform, Alabama, the oldest daughter of Lemuel Jasper and Annie Williams Howell. Her father was a teacher, principal and later superintendent of education in Pickens County. She was the devoted wife of James M. Beck for 41 years until his passing in 1993. Mrs. Beck received her bachelor’s degree from Montevallo University and her Masters in Home Economics from the University of Alabama. She was a beloved teacher of Home Economics at Fairhope High School for over 45 years. Mrs. Beck was a longtime and active member of Fairhope United Methodist Church, where she was active in the Dorothy Jackson Circle. She is survived by her sister, Carmen Howell Headley, Fairhope; niece, Pat (Bill) Bagby, Fairhope; cousin, Marietta Cooper Bigler, Champaign, IL; Madelyn Carr (Don) Bonnett, Columbiana, AL, as well as several other cousins throughout the U.S.; special friend/caregiver Edna Keller, of Fairhope; also caring sitters Kitty Davis and daughter Supra of Mobile. Funeral services will be held from Fairhope United Methodist Church, Monday, January 13th, 2014, at 11:00am. Mrs. Beck will lie in state at the church from 10:00am until the service time.
