July 18, 1922 — October 29, 2013

FAIRHOPE, AL Newton Eugene Delchamps, Jr. was born in Mobile, AL. on July 18, 1922. He went to be with his Lord Jesus on October 29, 2013 at age 91. Newton was predeceased by his parents, Ethel Savage and Newton Eugene Delchamps, his loving wife of almost 65 years, Effie Bishop Delchamps and his son-in-law, Wayne Bobbitt. N.E. graduated from Alba High School in Bayou La Batre, AL in 1941 and joined the U.S. Navy. He was a World War II veteran and a Battle of Midway survivor. After 23 years in the Navy, Newton retired and moved his family to Fairhope, AL. where he spent the next several decades as a field underwriter for New York Life Ins. Co. Newton and Effie shared their faith and served with their talents for over 40 years in several churches in Fairhope. Newton believed in the friendliness and beauty of Fairhope. He was a leader in the Civitan Club and, along with Oliver Rockwell, began the American flag program for the city. He was an avid Volunteer of Thomas Hospital Auxiliary. In his latter years, he nicknamed himself the “Litter Czar of Fairhope” and picked up litter around the city on his scooter. He wanted to model and inspire others to serve in their community. Retired Master Chief Delchamps wore his uniform on patriotic holidays and loved to share his colorful memories of the years he served his country. Newton leaves behind a family who love him dearly, two daughters, Linda Bobbitt, and Charlotte Laughlin, who husband, Bill, enriched Newton’s senior years with his companionship, labors of love and attentive care. Newton often said of Bill, “I couldn’t have loved my own son more than I love Bill.” Newton also will be missed by his sister-in-law, Betty Savage and her family, his cousins, Lola Barrett, Laura Foster, Allen Mayfield and Eddie Zewen. Effie and Newton’s five grandchildren were the centerpiece of their family. They are Dex (Charla) Bobbitt, Britt Bobbitt Wharton, Brian (Rebecca) Laughlin, Leigh Ann Laughlin (Dan) Crawford and David (Mary Faith) Laughlin. They adored their grandparents and were inspired by their faith and marriage. The Delchamps’ treasured great grandchildren are Christopher Laughlin, Daniel Laughlin, and Katelyn Laughlin, all of Mobile; Taylor (Jaden) Wharton, Will Wharton, and Charles Wharton, all of Madison, MS; Julia Crawford, Charlotte Crawford and Will Crawford all of Orlando, FL. and Drew Laughlin, Lydia Jane Laughlin and Ryan Laughlin all of Newnan, GA. Newton’s legacy includes great, great grandson, Jase Wharton of Madison, MS. Newton will be missed by his “shipmate” Gordon Pierce and his wife, Ann. Newton’s family wishes to express their deep appreciation to Dr. Michael McBrearty for his amazing care for both Newton and Effie over many years. Proof of God’s blessings on Newton is his five year friendship with Marie Williams. During the last years of his life she gave him loving care wrapped in prayer. He loved her sweetness, her humor and her abiding faith in God. The family will receive friends Thursday, October 31, 2013 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home in Fairhope.
