FAIRHOPE, AL Mildred B. Smart, age 90, a lifelong resident of Fairhope, passed away Friday, June 28, 2013 at her home.Mrs. Smart was born August 27, 1922 in Pine Apple, Alabama to Millard and Irene (Wright) Brantley. She spent her early life in the community of Belforest, and graduated from Fairhope High School in 1941. Following retirement from Woodhaven Dairy in 1977, she continued bookkeeping for several years, working for Penry Farms and Judy’s Violets. Mrs. Smart served as secretary treasurer and president of BPW, and through the years, was active in several organizations and activities in the communities of Belforest, Fairhope, Silverhill, and Robertsdale. She served as a volunteer at Thomas Hospital for 26 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Fairhope where she served as a Sunday School teacher for many years. Known for her hospitality, she welcomed her home to family, friends, and visitors from around the globe and served delicious meals.She is preceded in death by her husband Franklin, of 71 years.She is survived by her four children: Eleanor (Lyle) Underwood, Leonard (Sharon) Smart, Alice (John) Corley, and Iris Smart (Walter McMeans); five grandchildren: Kim Frank, David Smart, Gabe Tipton, John and Neil Wood; seven great grandchildren; devoted housekeeper, Rebecca Coleman.
