Julian Randolph Buck, age 97, a resident of Fairhope, passed away Sunday, May 5, 2013 in Daphne, AL after a short illness. Randolph was born February 9, 1916 at Bridgeport, CT, the son of James Orton Buck, manager of the former R.G.Dun Co. for the state of Maine; and Myra Estelle Wooster, a talented miniature portrait painter. He was raised in Portland, ME. In 1938 he graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, MA with a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity Randolph’s career choice of petroleum and natural gas engineering, took him from being a roustabout in the oil fields of South Louisiana marshes, to consulting engineering firms, and ending with retirement from a long career with Michigan Consolidated Gas Company in Detroit, MI as Manager of Engineering for Oil and Gas Reserves and Gas Storage Field Development. During WWII, Randolph served his country as an engineer-employee for the US Navy at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, MS. Randolph’s memberships include these: Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, a Legion of Honor member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, Order of the Crown of Charlemagne in the US, Descendants of Colonial Governors, the Cogswell Family Association, and Sons of the American Revolution. In 1997 Randolph was accepted as Member in the Olave-Baden Powell Society under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Benedikte of Denmark. Randolph was long active in the continuation of the traditional Episcopal Church, having served as Senior Warden at St. Columba’s in Detroit, MI and St. Luke’s in Gulfport, MS. His hobbies and favorite pastimes included swimming, tennis, sailing, collecting post cards, investments, Big Band music, and dancing. Randolph was preceded in death by his beloved first wife, Evelyn Renfroe Buck, who died in 1989, and was the mother of his three children; his brother, James Orton Buck, and his parents. Randolph is survived by his sister, Beatrice Buck of Winter Park, FL; his treasured second wife, Hazel Harrison Buck, of Fairhope, AL; his much-loved oldest son, Julian Randolph Buck, Jr. (Marianne) of Houston, TX; his much-loved younger son, Robert Treat Buck, of San Bruno, CA; and his much-loved daughter, Karen Buck Butler (Steve) of Ridgefield, WA.
