Margaret "Peggy" Louise Jeffery

d. March 21, 2013

SPANISH FORT Margaret "Peggy" Wilder Jeffery passed away on March 21, 2013 in Mobile, AL after receiving treatment for cancer for almost a year. She was born October 12, 1934 in Marietta, GA to Elsie Barnes Wilder and Edward Anderson Wilder, and was a resident of Spanish Fort, AL for 46 years. Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Mobile banker, William Arthur Jeffery, II, and brothers-in-law, Francis E. Jeffery, Arthur B. Jeffery, and Gerald L. Robinson. She is survived by her sons, William A. Jeffery, III (Phyllis) of Mobile, and James A. Jeffery, M.D. (Kathryn Murdoch) of Huntsville, AL , grandson, James F. Jeffery of Mobile, and dear friend, Victor Hendrickson of Daphne. She is also survived by in-laws, Diane Jeffery Robinson of Lexington, KY, Frankie Bratton-Jeffery of Oviedo, FL, Darwin Pippin of Andalusia, AL, and nephews and nieces, Jeffery and Becky Robinson, Jessica and Eric Bylund, and Anne Bratton-Jeffery. Other survivors include four great nieces and a great nephew. Peggy attended William and Mary College in Williamsburg, VA on a scholarship of which she was especially proud. She had a long and successful career in Banking and Mortgage Underwriting, retiring in 1993. Peggy loved opera, and she and Bill were active supporters of Mobile Opera during their married life. She enjoyed traveling far and near, making a tradition of spending Mardi Gras in Apalachicola, FL. with Bill and a group of friends. Peggy was an avid reader, enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, had fun gardening, and was an accomplished cook. Friendship was important to Peggy. She had many friends; two were like sisters to her, Nancy MacPherson of Marietta, GA, and Shirley Atwood of Florence, MA. For most of her life, Peggy was an Episcopalian. Most recently, and for many years, she was an active parishioner of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Daphne. She participated in the Stephen Ministry, the Altar Guild, and was a leader of the United Thanksgiving Offering. Peggy learned to needlepoint so she could help make kneelers for the church, was a compassionate supporter of parishioners in need, and she served on the Vestry. Peggy completed Suwannee’s Education for Ministry (EfM) course of study. Peggy was devoted to those she loved. In addition to being a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, she provided special care for family and friends when they became ill. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Daphne, AL on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at 2:00 PM. A reception will be held in the parish hall after the service. Memorial donations may be made to the Mobile Opera, Wilmer Hall, or a favorite charity. The family expresses gratitude to those who comforted Peggy throughout her illness: Rev. Thack Dyson, Rev. Albert Kennington, Rev. Richard Schmidt, Marilyn Owen, Jean Palmer, and Ruth Skaggs.
