FAIRHOPE Mr. Joseph Steven Novak, age 91, was born on September 14, 1921 in Hopelawn, NJ. He passed away peacefully near his home in Fairhope, AL on Monday morning, March 18, 2013. After graduating from Woodbridge (NJ) High School in 1939, Joseph served as an Ensign in the United States Navy during World War II. Following the Navy Joseph graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. He went on to work for Chevron Corporation in Perth Amboy, NJ, San Francisco, CA and Pascagoula, MS where he eventually retired in 1980. “Uncle Yoke” to his adoring nieces and nephews, he was never happier than when he was attending one of their ball games or hearing about their latest accomplishments. He was preceded in death by his father, John; mother, Katherine; sister, Margaret Onuska, and brothers Frank, John and Andrew. He is survived by nieces, Rose (Bob) Meszaros, Kathleen Novak, Judi Clark, and Mary (Dave) Paradis; and nephews, Michael (Cathy) Onuska, Joseph (Debbie) Onuska, Frank (Irene) Novak, Michael (Valerie) Novak, Richard (Cheryl Covino) Novak, John (Donna) Novak, Kenny (Debbie) Novak, and Steve (Tracey) Novak; as well as many great nieces and nephews. Joseph was a uniquely wonderful, loving and generous man and he will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, March 23, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 370 S. Section Street, Fairhope, where friends may visit from 10:00 a.m. until Mass. Interment will be at Belforest Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Lawrence Catholic Church.
