McGILL FOLEY, AL Sandy Douglas McGill age 82, a native of Bay Minette, Al and a resident of Foley, Al passed away Monday, February 4, 2013 Mr. McGill was preceded in death by his father, John H. McGill, mother, Vivian Lee McGill and four brothers, Jack H. McGill, Joseph Ned McGill, Frank E. McGill and John E. McGill. His lifelong dedication to others included his family, church, and community. Sandy was a model of support and encouragement to all of those whose life he touched. He is survived by his wife Sylvia McGill of Foley, AL , one son John Bruce McGill of Orange Beach, AL , a daughter Jo McGill Hellmich (Ralph G.) of Foley, AL, one sister Sara Ezell of Tuscaloosa, AL, three grandchildren, Kristin Hellmich Roberson, Kurt Hellmich, Kate Hellmich, a great grandson, Caleb King, and beloved nieces and nephews. He loved his family dearly and stated often that his favorite hobby was spending time with his grandchildren and great grandson. Sandy was a man of deep faith in God and he lived to serve others. He was a self-taught musician and gave freely of his time and talents. Those talents included playing the piano, organ, and singing. He delighted in his service to various church music programs throughout his life. He was instrumental in the organization of The Orange Beach United Methodist Church and Morgan’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Bon Secour, AL. After graduating from Baldwin County High School in 1948 he attended the University of Alabama for two years before entering the US Army. After two years of active service, he worked full time with the Alabama National Guard in Bay Minette for twelve years. The remainder of his career was in hospital administration. He served hospitals in Jay, FL, Flomaton, Al and Atmore, Al. In 1974 he fulfilled his dream of becoming the administrator of South Baldwin Hospital. He served as hospital administrator for over 20 years retiring briefly only to resume his service to the hospital as administrative consultant of South Baldwin Regional Medical Center. He was an active member of the Board of Directors for South Baldwin Regional Medical Center and the South Baldwin County Health Care Authority. During his years of leadership the hospital experienced tremendous growth and excellence in technological advancements. Throughout each new addition to the hospital, patient care was Sandy’s first and foremost concern. He visited new patients regularly and offered comfort and concern to both patient and family members. His presence and influence will be missed by patients and employees of South Baldwin Regional Medical Center. Sandy’s community service included serving on the Board of Directors for the Alabama Hospital Association and was very proud to serve as their president. He was a past member of the Foley Rotary Club. He often quoted his favorite scripture from the Book of Matthew: “In as much as you have done it to the least of these my brethren, you have done it unto me.” His daily life of service was a testament to his faith. The family will receive friends Wednesday, February 6, 2013 from 5:00pm until 7:00pm at the Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home in Foley, AL Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 7, 2013 at 10:00am from the Chapel of Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home in Foley, AL Graveside and Interment will be held Thursday, February 7, 2013 at 2:00pm in Bay Minette Cemetery, Bay Minette, AL. In lieu of flowers the family suggests making donations to the Sandy McGill Scholarship Fund in care of South Baldwin Health Care Authority 1613 North McKenzie Street Foley, AL 36535 or to the Morgan Chapel United Methodist Church Building Fund.
