FAIRHOPE , AL Carl M. Adams, age 94, formerly of Lorain , OH , a resident of Fairhope for 20 years, died Thursday morning (July 19) at Thomas Hospital . He was born September, 1, 1917 in Tiffin , OH . Mr. Adams served in the US Army during World War II and was honorably discharged as First Sergeant after 38 months of service, 23 of which were in the European Theater. He was an entrepreneur whose career encompassed banking, communications, real estate development and energy exploration. He was publisher of the Lorain ( Ohio ) Journal and president of Great Lakes Broadcasting Company, which operated nine radio stations in six states. With partners, his enterprises took him halfway around the world to Jakarta , Indonesia where he operated a business for seven years. In Ohio he was trustee of the Lorain County Community College , chairman and trustee of Lorain County Medical Foundation, a member of the board of Lorain Central Bank, and president/director of the Lorain , Ohio Memorial Association. When he and his wife moved to Fairhope, he was not quite ready to retire so he joined with other local businessmen to invest in Fairhope real estate. . In 2004, he was the recipient of a Doctor of Humane Letters from Tiffin University in Tiffin , Ohio , which he had attended in his youth. On the occasion of his 90th birthday, Mayor Tim Kant proclaimed September First as Carl Adams Day in Fairhope in recognition of his remarkable and interesting career. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Ann Rickabaugh Adams, two daughters, Caryl Adams of La Mesa , CA , and Hallie Schiavoni of Willoughby Hills , OH , one granddaughter, and three great grandchildren. Memorial services will be held Friday, July 27, 2012 at 11 am at the chapel of Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home in Fairhope , AL . The family will receive friends one hour prior to services. Graveside services will be held Friday, Aug 3, 2012 at 11:30 am in Pleasant View Cemetery in Sycamore, OH.
