DAPHNE Secar Jackson Harris born in Deer Park, AL on Nov. 24, 1918 passed away at his residence in Daphne, AL on Saturday, May 14, 2011. Preceded in death were his parents Clem and Olivia Harris of Citronelle, AL, two brothers Bernard Harris of Mobile, AL and James (Juanita) Harris of Tuscaloosa, AL. He is survived by his wife Madeline Northcutt Harris, children Secar Jackson Harris, Jr. of Mobile, AL, Grace Harris Ellis of Daphne, AL, Olivia Harris Avent (John) of Magnolia Springs, AL, and Michael Eugene Harris (Karen) of Milton, FL., grandchildren Morgan Harris Vesey (Nick) of Gulf Shores, AL, Daniel Ellis of Mobile, AL, Jenny Avent Williams (Darrel) of Austin, Texas, Kathryn Ellis of Daphne, AL, Michael Harris of Milton, FL, John Avent of Tuscaloosa, AL, Georgia Pearle Oyen of Fairhope, AL and Kyle Ellis of Burlington, Vermont, great grandchild Ashley Vescey of Gulf Shores, AL, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Secar graduated from Murphy High School in Mobile, AL. He was a star athlete in football, track, swimming, diving and tennis. He received a football scholarship to L.S.U. and played tennis until the age of 86. In 1943, he joined the Air Force and became a pilot. He flew B17’s and then B24’s. He was an Air Craft Commander and on his fifth mission over Germany, his plane caught fire and he and his crew parachuted out. He spent fifteen months in a German prison camp. After the war ended, he stayed in the Air Force Reserves and was called back to service during the Korean war. He married Madeline in 1952. He spent a year at Brookley Air Force Base in Mobile, Al before being transferred to Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. He resigned from service in 1956 and returned to Mobile to live. He owned two businesses in Foley and one in Gulf Shores before retiring to Daphne, AL. He donated his body to the State of Alabama Anatomical Board for medical research.
